About On Display Collabs
What is a Collab?
Basically, a collaboration, in On Display terms, is when all of us write
about the same topic. In the past, the topics have been phrases or
questions. Now, often the topic of the monthly collab is one word which
is picked through the mailing list. You are free to interpret the word to
mean anything you want and write about it as you see fit. It's a really
great way to build a community feeling, and for the individual writers,
for them to focus their skills on one subject. The main purpose is to have
fun doing what you love to do.
Why do we have Collabs?
On Display was reborn in September of 1998, when the then-ringbabe
Elizabeth decided to make collaborations a requirement of being in the
ring. Collaborations bring a sense of community to our webring, making it
different from most other 'page-jewelry' webrings. In January of 1999,
collabs became mandatory.
Who's in charge of the Collabs?
The topic is decided by consensus on the mailing list. Currently, Rachel
is handling the collabs. She is in charge of keeping the Collabs section
of the On Display site current and functioning, keeping track of the topic
ideas batted around on the mailing list, and announcing the topic by the
first of every month. She also keeps track of excuses.
What about collaboration?
Many ring members were itching to do a project that was actually
collaborative, since the current collabs only serve as writing prompts. We
termed them 'side projects' and we've completed Round
Robin #1 and Round Robin #2; now we're on Round Robin #3. Ongoing side projects include Personal ABCs, the Questionnaire, and The Alice Project.
